Hello, Readers!

Today, the second audiobook in the Lens series, The Volunteer, is available on Audible! You can get your copy here!

I thought I might tell you the story of how this all came to pass and share a little of the excitement it has generated for me.

Long Shot

Last fall, I submitted my novel, The Designate, for consideration for publication with the audio publisher, Podium. I sent them a query and a link to where they could download the book for their review. A couple weeks later I received an email in return telling me that they do not consider outside proposals from authors … except that they’d read the series anyway and wanted to go into contract for the whole five books!

The day I heard from Podium that they were going to publish my Lens series on Audible.com was one of the more exciting days in my writing career. Podium is a popular audio publisher in the indie business, and to be picked up by them would save me (many) thousands of dollars. Hiring and producing an audiobook is not a cheap proposition (and my audiobooks are between 13-15 hours long!). Additionally, Podium had published the audiobook for The Martian by Andy Weir, and while hitting the big time with my series was a faraway dream, it was still an exciting proposition. Sometimes thinking ridiculously big is just what the doctor ordered. It was fun to dream!

But let’s get real…

Being an independent author (or an independent anything) is often a challenging journey. In fact, and most people don’t know this, being traditionally published can be equally as hard both financially and content-wise. That said, being an indie provides much artistic freedom. You are the captain of your own ship, and it’s sink or swim every day. The likelihood that my Lens series would be taken on by any other publisher or studio was, and is, extremely slim. But sometimes it takes a little nudge from the outside world to encourage me to keep going, to

never. give. up.

I hope you’ll pull down your copy of The Volunteer soon, and if you do, let me know what you think! In the meantime, I’ll keep writing, dreaming, and thinking big.

Happy Listening!
